Stephanie Morton edit

Hi Laura, reading the article Stephanie Morton, it's not at all clear what her role in the tandem is. Reading between the lines, I would say that she is able bodied, and acts as the "lookout" as you will while a visually impaired rider in front does all the pedalling and hard work... but I am guessing all that based on the article. A lot of the sources also seem to assume prior knowledge on the part of the reader. Is there an article on Paralympic tandem cycling we could link to, or would it be possible to put a brief description of the discipline into the article? Women's basketball edit

Hi Laura and Dale, I've been working to improve the coverage of women's basketball on Wikipedia. I recently decided I'd like to work on some of the general history of the sport. Despite having looked at Wikipedia for years, today was the first day I had taken a look at Women's basketball.

It looks like the perfect place include some expanded coverage of the history. I see Laura is one of the major contributor. In fact, the only contributor with over 10 edits who has edited this decade. I see Dale Arnett has also edit a fair bit, I'll copy him as well.

Obviously, I can just jump in, but I'd like to be a little structured. The article has grown organically, and this may be a good time to think about the structure. For example, the Rules and Equipment section is quite choppy. I don't like one or two sentence sections, so we ought to decide whether they could be expanded or if another format is better. I'm mulling over whether a table would make sense, with the current headings as rows, and high school/college/FIBA/WNBA as columns, although I haven't though through how the time element should be handled.

I'd like to see a timeline. A detailed timeline might deserve to be its own article, with a major milestones timeline included here. Do you know whether any other articles have adopted that concept?

The opening history paragraph begs for some paragraph breaks, but as that is one of the areas I want to expand, I think that will just happen.

I'd also like to discuss whether the overall structure makes sense. It is interesting that this article emphasizes location, with the "Around the World" section being the single largest, while Basketball has no such section at all.

I see the Basketball article has a bit of history in each of several sections, in one on women;s basketball, then has a second, expanded article History of basketball, which doesn't mention women.

We ought to discuss whether the history of women's basketball should be primarily in History of basketball, with summaries and Main article links in Basketball and Women's basketball, or something else.

Lots to think about, and I guess I ought to post something at wikiproject basketball. --SPhilbrick(Talk) 18:35, 26 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the response. My knowledge is US centric, although I do want the article to reflect the world. That's one of the reasons I am reaching out to you, as you can help make sure I'm not too US centric. I'm not quite sure whether to start a discussion on the talk page of WikiProject Basketball, or an the talk page of Women's basketball. My current thinking is to post it on the talk page of Women's basketball, and then add a note to the Wikiproject page and the History of basketball page.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 21:08, 26 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi-many thanks for the Gibraltar Rock State Natural Area aricle in Columbia County, Wisconsin; it was well written and research. I did asked Royalbroil if he had any photos of Gibraltar Rock; Royalbroil and I are members of the Wisconsin Wikiproject. I also found the town of West Point, Wisconsin that Gibraltar Rock is located in in Columbia County and added that to the article. I also express my concern to Royalbroil that I hope the Gibraltar Rock article will not get entangle with the Gibraltar WikiProject mess at DYK. Also in Wisconsin, the town of Gibraltar, Wisconsin is located in Door County, Wisconsin. I told Royalbroil I will let you know about my concerns involving the Gibraltar Rock article and the Gibraltar WikiProject mess at DYK-thank you-RFD (talk) 13:30, 29 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Gibraltar edit

You're welcome :-) I didn't get the joke; until looking at your contributions just now, I didn't know that anyone else was writing articles about non-Mediterranean Gibraltars. I just got the idea yesterday when I was preparing the DYK for Holmes County Courthouse (Ohio), and a little searching through Elkman's tool for National Register of Historic Places sites named "Gibraltar" revealed this place. Nyttend (talk) 03:17, 30 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, just a coincidence; someone already wrote about the Gibraltar Road–Waterway Canal Bridge, and Gibraltar (Wilmington, Delaware) has so much documentation that I'd need a lot more work to give it justice. Nyttend (talk) 03:26, 30 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Gibraltars in the United States edit

Hi-I added a GNIS citation to the Gibraltar, Pennsylvania article. I am not sure if you can make it a DYK or not. There is an unincorporated community in Washington State in Skagit County-Gibraltar, Washington but according to GNIS it is also known as Dewey, Washington. You have also the city of Gibraltar, Michigan and the town of Gibraltar, Wisconsin. I hope this helps-RFD (talk) 12:22, 30 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi-I started the Gibraltar, Washington article. Dewey, Washington is 2-3 miles away so there is no problem. I hope you people can make DYK articles from them-thanks-RFD (talk) 13:01, 30 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Earning medals edit

Hi Laura, please do not write that sportspeople "earned" their medals, as you did at Bart Bunting and many, many other pages that I have corrected in the past. It is non-standard wording that violates the neutral point of view policy, because it implies a judgement on how much effort they put into winning the medals. In 99.9% of cases it's almost definitely warranted, but did Lance Armstrong "earn" his seven yellow jerseys? In the same way that we go out of our way not to directly call people like Osama bin Laden terrorists, we should not place positive value judgements on sportspeople. Plus, the word "earned" just sounds hideous in just about every English accent besides received pronunciation. Use "won" instead. Graham87 08:15, 2 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

I have brought this issue up at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Sports#Dispute about use of word "earn" to describe winning medals. Graham87 09:28, 2 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
Laura isn't wrong, sportspeople work (by training and competing) to win, therefore earning the award which could be a gold medal or a trophy and isn't a NPOV issue. Lance Armstrong and Osama bin Laden have nothing to do with this. Bidgee (talk) 10:03, 2 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hello Laura – I have just closed the discussion mentioned above as "no topic ban" as there were many more people opposing a topic ban than there were supporting one. However, even some of those who opposed a topic ban could see that your article writing could be improved, thus hopefully avoiding problems in future. I strongly suggest that you take a deep breath and read the discussion, then do what you can in future to address issues that people have raised. I'm sure that there are many people in that discussion who would be prepared to offer a second opinion on something you're working upon, if you want it, and feel free to let me know (by talk page or by email) if there's anything I can do to help. Gibraltar Range edit

Good evening. I thought I'd work on DYK while I watch the election returns. You and I worked on Flat Bastion Road together and, at the time, you mentioned your concern that your prose was suffering from the fact-cite-fact-cite encouraged by Wikipedia. I notice that there's been some discussion of your writing at DYK. I want you to know that I think you do very well with research and inline citations. You're also good at compartmentalizing into sections. I think there are two main issues. One is your inclusion of details that some might consider trivial (although I think you're trying to be thorough). The other is the flow of your prose. Example:

The Rufous Scrub-bird lives in the Gibraltar Range.[19] The population was reduced slightly as a result of a fire in 2002.[24] The Waratah lives in isolated parts of the range.[1] The area is home to vascular flora.[22] The Parma wallaby also lives within the range.[25] Parts of the range are composed of "thickly forested highlands."[17] During the 1850s, European fruit trees were planted in the range.[7]

This is the last section of your Gibraltar Range article. I think it would benefit from some small changes. For example, the statement that it's home to vascular flora doesn't add much-it's a very nonspecific sentence and I would eliminate it. From there, I would group plants together and animals together. Since we have info from the 1850s, I would start there, so plants first. Also, the article doesn't indicate that the trees were planted in the 1850s. They were growing in the 1850s. In addition, "the Waratah lives" makes it sound like the Waratah is an animal. Also, for the Waratah, it wasn't isolated areas of the range, but isolated populations of the Waratah. So we're left with:

During the 1850s, European fruit trees flourished at the base of the range.[7] "Thickly forested highland" areas now cover part of the mountains, and there are isolated populations of the Waratah.[1][17] The Rufous Scrub-bird lives in the Gibraltar Range, although the population was reduced slightly as a result of a fire in 2002.[19][24] The mountain range is also home to the Parma wallaby.[25]

Occasionally, two sentences can be linked into one. Also, transition words are helpful. The ones I added above include "and" and "although." In addition, you can vary your sentence structure. I hope this has been helpful. If you're interested, I would be happy to help you work on the rest of the article tomorrow. Anne (talk) 03:09, 7 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

I like your copyediting work, Anne, and have tweaked it a little. In particular, I've changed "as a result of" to "due to", as there's no need to use four words when two will do. Here is a list of other such overly formal words and phrases. Also, always check the output of the Reflinks tool. In many cases, such as the above-linked diff, it produces overly long link titles, because it simply takes the "title=" field from the title of the webpage. 3. Template:Did you know nominations/Non-constituency Member of Parliament
  4. Template:Did you know nominations/Esme Tombleson (listed above yesterday, but I figured it was best to have them all in one place)

There are also a few of your own articles that seem to have stalled. If you're going to be unavailable for a while, these risk someone thinking they've been abandoned, so please try to post something this weekend:

  1. Template:Did you know nominations/Women's football in Africa: I notified Riley Huntley, who nominated your article for DYK, of issues I'd had with the article that prevented me from promoting it. If Riley didn't ask you about these issues, they do need to be addressed, so I'm notifying you directly.
  2. Template:Did you know nominations/Andy Bor: this is a double nomination, and there hasn't been any response to Yoninah's response to your most recent comment. Hawkeye7's the nominator, but hasn't chimed in either.
  3. Template:Did you know nominations/Gibraltar Ranges: Anne responded a few days ago, noting some remaining issues to be addressed.
  4. Template:Did you know nominations/Gibraltar Rock, Porongurups: the hook was pulled from the prep areas due to factual inaccuracies. A new hook was needed; George Ho has proposed two which I think are completely uninteresting, but what this really needs is your proposal for a new hook, with or without your thoughts (as creator) on George's two.

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. FIBA edit

I received an email from the Communications Department of FIBA, regarding possible help with editing of FIBA related articles. I posted a plea to Dale Arnett (User_talk:Dale_Arnett#FIBA_2), because he has worked on FIBA article, but I haven't yet heard from him. I know you have interest including Australian basketball, so I am hoping your interests include FIBA. I'm mulling over whether to create a Wikiproject FIBA, or to work within Wikiproject basketball. I'd be interested in your specific thoughts on that options, as well as any other ideas you might have.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 14:40, 13 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

GANs for classifications edit

Hi Laura-- Based on Wikipedia:WikiProject_Olympics/Paralympics#Recognized_content, am I correct in assuming that there's no "model article" (an existing GA or FA) to base my review on? They look pretty solid, from my quick glance at two of them, and given your sport and para-sport track record, that's certainly not unexpected. Just wanted to double check that that's indeed the case. -- Zanimum (talk) 00:44, 19 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Accidentally just found Para-swimming classification, a GA, so that'll provide a good basis for review of the skiing article. I won't commit to this just yet, but I'll keep it high on my radar. -- Zanimum (talk) 02:07, 19 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

That's great, I'll take a look at them. Are you going on Wiki business following up from the Paralympics or for pleasure? The work you did with the Australian Paralympic team was fantastic, I wish we had the same sort of liaison with the British team. Then again it's amazing just how much of a celebrity status some of them got after the Games - rather makes the lack of following in the United States of their Paralympic team seem a bit abysmal. Miyagawa (talk) 12:02, 5 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
User:LauraHale/Miguel Galindo should now be ready, I've gone through a copyedited a few places for tense and flow, and added a few more wikilinks where I thought that they were needed. I'll leave it up to you to move them into main space. Also did a double check on Highbeam and Questia and although Highbeam had an image of the pair, Questia didn't have anything. The Highbeam text was just a caption for the image and so wasn't worthwhile adding to the article. Miyagawa (talk) 12:41, 5 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi Laura,

There are a few errors in the article. There is no such thing as 2007 Paralympic Winter World Cup. First Paralympic Winter World Cup held in 2009 in Sweden. You misinterpreted this source; I Copa Paralímpica means first Paralympic Cup not the Paralympic World Cup I. I don't think correct name of the federation is Federación Catalana Minusvalids Fisics, it should be Federació Catalana d'Esports de persones amb Discapacitat Física (FCEDF). "He did not rank amongst the top 25 skiers in the Super-G race and did not advance to the finals", this sentence doesn't make any sense as reference you have used is of 2009 IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships. — Bill william comptonTalk 18:33, 5 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

A Barnstar for you! edit

  The Tireless Contributor Barnstar
I recently had the pleasure of doing the Good Article review on seven of your "LW" Paralympic Skiing sport class articles. What a large amount of excellent work in an area that otherwise probably would not have been covered! One thing that is particularly interesting about doing GA review is the whole new areas that I end up learning, and this group of articles certainly is that. I understand that there is a duo on this, with LauraHale handling more of the content and Hawkeye7 handling more of working them through the review process. Congratulations on a large amount of excellent work! Sincerely, North8000 (talk) 21:59, 29 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

In reference to the deleted article John Moulton (medical practitioner) I'm wondering if you might reconsider your opposition to this article. I have recently read WP:NRU and feel that it conclusively proves Moulton's notability for inclusion in Wikipedia. I hope you will agree and assist me in it being reinstated. As the team doctor he was an administrator of a "High Performance Union" for a long period and also at the time of winning the Rugby World Cup so he is clearly deemed notable by current standards. WEF Elections edit

Laura, I saw your deleted post at the ENB and since you deleted it thought I'd respond here instead of there. We can move this thread to the ENB if you think it should go back there. The short answer is no, you wouldn't have to be selected by the board; there will be an election process on-wiki and you'd be able to run for that.

The longer answer, in case you're interested, is that there are two kinds of non-profit in the US. One has members, and the other has only a board, who constitute the entire membership. The first kind ("membership organizations") have additional legal requirements that wouldn't have worked for us. For example, there has to be an annual general meeting; all members have to be notified so they can attend; there has to be a defined way for people to become members, and only members can vote on board seats. This would have been very difficult to manage with educators in particular, although there would have been some challenges with Wikipedians too. AGMs are expensive to run, and the notifications would have been expensive, and it would not be easy to engage educators as members, at least initially. The biggest problem is that we wanted different seats to represent our different constituencies, and if we have members they can all vote on every seat, so we wouldn't be able to have educator board seats as distinct from Wikipedian board seats. Instead we decided to do what the WMF does, which is to have a structure which is technically not a membership organization, but run it more or less like a membership organization. The seats on the board set aside for Wikipedians will be elected; we may have some kind of qualification as the WMF does -- minimum number of edits, for example. The educator seats are going to be a bit trickier because we have fewer involved editors but again some sort of election will be necessary; there was a thread on the ENB a month or so ago about this and a couple of different suggestions came up.

I hope this is helpful -- let me know if you have more questions. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 09:37, 18 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

I see you've posted at the ENB; I'll add a reply there. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 01:46, 19 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
Just a quick note, before I reply at the ENB; I didn't want to clutter up that page with this comment. I fixed the indenting there, and thought I'd pass on an explanation I got years ago from GeometryGuy that helped me remember how to do indenting: you have to repeat whatever the previous person used, and then add a ":", "#" or "*", depending on whether you want a space, number, or bullet. I posted with a ":#" so I made your posts ":#:" to preserve the numbering. If you'd wanted to use bullets instead, you'd have prefixed your posts with ":#*". Hope that's useful. Greenland national football team edit

Why did you boldly move this article? Not sure that it was an appropriate move since no other men's national team is described in this way. Also as is clearly stated when articles are moved the available option to editors is only for uncontroversial moves. As I am unaware of any consensus regarding such a renaming it seems that this wasn't the wisest thing to do. I think it should be moved back until consensus is formed. Peter Bush edit

Thanks for your Keep on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Peter Bush (businessman). This has been a painfully drawn out process and has seen some very odd responses that suggest that editors do little research before casting a "vote". The original call for deletion came within minutes of a confrontation I had with the editor who made the call and at best appeared to be vexatious. For that reason I was very surprised by the calls for Delete from so many. Where does this article go wrong or am I mistaken in finding the subject obviously notable in the Australan business and sporting worlds? Castlemate (talk) 20:57, 2 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

RfC:Infobox Road proposal edit

WP:AURD (Australian Roads), is inviting comment on a proposal to convert Australian road articles to {{infobox road}}. Please come and discuss. The vote will be after concerns have been looked into.

You are being contacted as a user who participated in previous discussions proposing the deletion of {{infobox Australian road}}, this RfC does not propose that.

Researching sport fan communities edit

Hi Laura, First, your work here is awesome - keep it up! Secondly, I wanted to touch base with you and learn more about your research and framework for exploring fan communities in social media. I'm 2 years thick in the middle of a netnography of USWNT fans on Tumblr - plus researching how webs of knowledge are built through Wikipedia & cultural heritage institution resources, as well as understanding communities of practice who use digitized resources from these institutions online. I shall google a bit more & see if I can track your work down. Congrats on submitting/being near the end of your work (if I've read that correctly)! The Wikinewsie Group Newsletter - Edition 1, June 1, 2013 edit

The Wikinewsie Group Newsletter

Sharing news about the group's activities
and things taking place on local Wikinews projects.

Issue 1 - June 1/2, 2013

The Wikinewsie Group News edit

Since mid-April, supporters of The Wikinewsie Group have been quite active, doing a number of activities in support of the organization. These include selecting a provisional board, engaging in research projects, working to support original reporting, discussing setting up off-line events, and promoting our efforts and the broader work being done by Wikinews reporters.

  • On May 4, a meeting was held to select the provisional board. It was decided that the board would be composed of the following people: LauraHale (Chair), Pi zero, Brian McNeil, Bjarki, ProtoplasmaKid. The total number of people and roles was based on the draft bylaws. 18 people, a little under half of all people who were listed as supporters, attended the meeting. aff-comm has been advised of this, and that we are ready to discuss the group's bylaws with them. They have responded back to indicate their review will start shortly.
  • Tentative steps are being taken to have a Wikimedia conference in Iceland with a Wikinews workshop as a component of it. This would likely be in December to coincide with the 10th birthday of Icelandic Wikipedia. Having some discussions about the possibility of having a small Wikinews conference somewhere in Europe sometime in the next year.
  • Wikinews:GLAM was created after writing about previous experiences with GLAM projects on English Wikinews and content related to GLAMs across all projects. Hopefully, with groundwork underway, there should be two announcements about Wikinews and GLAM projects by the end of June that will build upon previous success.
  • It does not look like there is a single presentation about Wikinews at Wikimania in Hong Kong has been approved. Given that, plans are to have some sort of Wikinews meetup while there independent of the official tracks.
  • Efforts are underway to do a better job at translating articles from one language to another, and successfully guide them through any local review processes. This is not a one way street of material from English Wikinews to other languages: We have successfully had two articles start on Spanish Wikinews that were translated to English Wikinews, where they passed the local review process and were successfully published. Comments on this effort are welcome at The Wikinewsie Group/Project planning and User talk:LauraHale: WORTNET.
  • Efforts are underway to develop a matrix to understand key policy, community and content requirement differences between different Wikinews projects. Once complete, this should ease cross Wikinews collaboration by having a starting point to discuss content related issues when translating for review, and trying to standardize any policies across projects.
  • Four pieces of research have been completed. They include Blocks on English Wikinews, Wikinews:GLAM/Coverage, Research:Wikinews Review Analysis and English Wikinews and the Gender Gap. If you are doing any research, formally or informally, about any language Wikinews project, please share it with The Wikinewsie Group as it will help better inform our decisions.
  • The development of a reviewing tool for English Wikinews continues. There are some concerns that the future roll out of Lua may hinder this. Once complete, this tool should make it easier for reviewers to leave feedback and check articles against all criteria.
  • Migration of the wikinewsie.org server to Iceland should be complete by the end of June. Once funding is secure, one of the first upgrades to the server will be to create a secure server and a dedicated host in order to encourage more investigative reporting and reporting of embargoed news stories. The server could also be used for development of bots, and mobile reporting tools. The planning is being done to give The Wikinewsie Group cloud space to host reporting notes, video and audio to support journalism efforts.
  • Icelandic Wikinews and Malayalam Wikinews are both hosted on incubator. The Icelandic Wikimedia mailing list and Indian editors have been contacted to encourage local editors to get the projects viable to move to the main space.
  • On social media, a few The Wikinewsie Group supporters are answering questions about Wikinews on quora. This is part of an effort to expand awareness about the Wikinews in general.
  • Follow @wikinewsie, The Wikinewsie Group on Twitter. Please tweet us any original reporting you are aware of on any project so we can tweet about it.
