The dog (Canis familiaris or Canis lupus familiaris) is a domesticated mixture of the wolf. Also called the domestic dog, it is derived from extinct Pleistocene wolves, and the modern wolf is the dog's nearest living relative.
Infectious diseases that affect dogs are important not only from a veterinary a standpoint, but also because of the risk to public health; an example of this is rabies.
