Notes
  • Considered by some to be his last work. An 1882 study of tree roots (F933) is referred to in a letter at the time as representing the struggle for life but it's not known whether the same thoughts had returned here and in any case the colours seem to bright for such sombre thoughts. In this final painting, as in Couple Walking in Rows of Poplar (F773), the painting itself and not the subject is pre-eminent, heralding abstract painting and German expessionism (van der Veen and Knapp, p. 242).

  • The tiles were assembled using Mathematica 9. The code used was as follows:
(* Path to directory where tiles are stored *)
TilesPath = "C:\\Users\\You\\Documents\\Wikipedia articles\\Vincent van Gogh\\Tree Roots and Trunks\\Tiles\\";
(* initialise row and column variables *)
m = 0;
n = 0;
(* Get tiles into m by n table *)
Tiles = Table[Import[TilesPath <> "4-" <> ToString[m] <> "-" <> ToString[n] <> ".jpg"], {n, 0, 6}, {m, 0, 13}];
(* Assemble Tiles *)
Assembled = ImageAssemble[Tiles]
(* Export file *)
Export[TilesPath <> "Assembled.jpg", Assembled];
