Notes Portrait possibly of Hercules, a Mount Vernon's chef and presidential cook in the nation's early capital in Philadelphia. He ran away in early 1797 after being put to work as a regular laborer back at Mount Vernon to circumvent a Pennsylvania's statute that would free any slave that lived six months in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Update Recent research has concluded that this painting is not by Stuart or of Hercules. Full story can be read in this Philadelphia Enquirer, published March 1, 2019.
